More than a few of the most famous homes in movie history were nothing more than facades in the back lot of a Burbank studio. But these ten homes had star power that movie producers knew they just couldn’t recreate on a set. Here are Halogen Guides’ ten favorite movie mansions.

The Shining: Overlook Hotel

Overlook timberline

Movie Location: High in the Colorado Rockies, 40 miles from the nearest (fictional) town, Sidewinder.
Actual Location: Timberline Lodge, Mount Hood, Ore.
Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) and his family got more than they bargained for when they agreed to be caretakers of a beautiful, but haunted, mountain lodge, while it was closed for the winter. The magnificent Timberline Lodge serves for the exterior shots in the film, while the interiors were done in studio. Just don’t go looking for the hotel’s hedge maze. That scene, where a crazed Nicholson chases after his family, was actually shot at Ellstree Studio in England.

Godfather II: Corleone Compound

Img 8677

Movie Location: Lake Tahoe
Actual Location: Just outside Tahoe City, Calif., on the west shore of Lake Tahoe.
Henry Kaiser’s estate serves as the Corleone Compound in this epic sequel, a superb setting for the crime family’s good times—the son’s first communion party—and by the film’s end an evocative backdrop for Michael’s growing isolation, as he sits staring by the lake. The Kaiser estate has been converted into a condominium community called Fleur du Lac.

Tony Montana’s House in Scarface

Montanahouse

Movie Location: Miami, Florida
Actual Location: Montecito, Calif.
Who could forget boatlift refugee turned drug lord Tony Montana’s cocaine fueled last stand as his rivals lay siege to his mansion? The mansion is in fact located on the west coast in the ultra-exclusive community of Montecito, just outside Santa Barbara. According to the New York Post, the home sold for $29.5 million dollars in 2006. As Tony would say “Maricon!

Batman (1989), Wayne Manor

Movie Location: Gotham City
Actual Location: Hertfordshire, England. Billionaire Bruce Wayne’s Tudor Gothic mansion in Tim Burton’s Batman is in fact the 15th century Tudor Gothic-style Knebworth House. About 20 miles outside of London, the ancestral home of the Lytton family is now open to the public for tours. Sadly, we understand that the Bat-cave is closed to visitors.

Back to the Future: Doc Brown’s House

Gamblehouse 2005

Movie Location: Hill Valley, Calif.
Actual Location: Pasadena, Calif.
This charming shingle house seems like it would probably be well outside the price range of the eccentric inventor Doc Brown who resides there in Back to the Future. The classic Arts and Crafts home was built for the Gamble family (of Proctor & Gamble) in 1908 by famed American architects Charles and Henry Greene. Today the house is a National Historic Landmark, open to the public for tours.

X-men 2: X-mansion aka Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters

Hatley castle

Movie Location: Salem Center, N.Y.
Actual Location: Victoria, British Columbia
The X-mansion is not only the headquarters for the X-men, it’s also a refuge for ostracized young mutants to learn and grow in their powers. The producers of X-men picked a location that seemed plucked directly from the pages of the comic strip. Hatley Castle, an ivy covered manor built in the Scottish Baronial style, was constructed by the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, James Dunsmuir, back in 1908. After passing thought the hands of the British royal family, who considered using it as a refuge during World War II, the castle is now home to Royal Roads University.

Octopussy: Kamal Khan’s Palace

Monsoonpalace

Movie Location: Outside New Delhi, India Actual Location: Outside Udaiphur, India. The island fortress of exiled Afghan Prince Kamal Khan that James Bond must infiltrate in Octopussy is in fact the Monsoon Palace. The palace was built during the Raj by Maharana Sajjan Singh and commands sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.

House on Haunted Hill: Frederick Loren’s House

Wright ennis house

Movie Location: Unspecified
Actual Location: Los Angeles, Calif.
The titular house from William Castle’s 1960 horror flick is none other than the famous Ennis House built by Frank Lloyd Wright. Covered in tile, the house was inspired by the Mayan temples of the Yucatan. After falling into disrepair, the home was placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s list of Most Endangered Historic Places. Thanks to their efforts, the house has received $20,000,000 in repairs with an aim to open the home to visitors.

Interview with the Vampire: Louis’ Mansion

Oakalley

Movie Location: New Orleans
Actual Location: Vacherie, La.
The Vampire Louis’ New Orleans estate is a restored antebellum plantation on banks of the Mississippi River. Named after the arcade of oaks leading up to the main house, Oak Alley has appeared in numerous films including Primary Colors and Fletch Lives.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Frank-N-furter Castle

Oakleycourt

Movie Location: Unspecified countryside
Actual Location: Berkshire, England
Nearly all of the action in the cult horror-comedy Rocky Horror Picture Show takes place in the lavish castle of transvestite-doctor Frank-N-Furter. At the end of the film the castle turns into a space ship which blasts off to return to planet Transsexual. Oakley Court, where the movie was shot is a tad bit more prosaic. Built in 1859 by Sir Richard Hall Say, it has now been converted into a luxury hotel.
