Beach lounging, hitting the slopes, or simply settling down in a luxury home with family are all staples of a destination club vacation, but more members are now tapping clubs’ concierge services to host larger events at properties. Members are increasingly using these homes for weddings, vow renewal celebrations, and even surprise engagements.
“Reunions, weddings, birthday celebrations and other gatherings are frequent occurrences at our club,” said Rachel Neumann, a spokeswoman for Exclusive Resorts, the largest club in the industry. “We are definitely seeing an uptick in the area of members organizing special events.”
Exclusive Resorts has arranged a surprise 20th wedding anniversary party complete with a fleet of chauffeured Rolls Royces, coordinated a marriage vow renewal ceremony on board a luxury residential cruise ship, The World, in the middle of the Mediterranean, and even assisted a couple planning a wedding in Florence, Italy. The club’s concierge team accompanied the bride and groom to the Italian consulate in San Francisco and acted as their witnesses so they could secure an Italian marriage license.
Some Exclusive Resorts’ members have purchased supplements to their membership plan that allows unaccompanied family members to use properties, while others have simply purchased a second membership in order to be able to book multiple residences in a single destination.
Other destination clubs are getting similar event requests from members. Homes in the LUSSO Collection have been host to both weddings and anniversary parties, but Kiersten Hegna, LUSSO’s vice president of service delivery said such events tend to be smaller affairs. “Members are taking their close friends and family and hosting the entire event at the house,” said Hegna. “They are not having the big party with everyone they know.”
At Quintess, the club’s Member Travel Advisors along with its concierge service has planned weddings, including one for a member’s son in St. Thomas. Like LUSSO, the events at the homes tend to be small scale because the club prefers that its homes not play host to large parties. Through the concierge service, however, Quintess can help plan a larger event with a bigger guest list.
Among the odder requests: planning a wedding on Hawaii’s Big Island that was a surprise to the bride. Quintess also helped one member stage an engagement in Maui and even arranged to capture the moment. The local host hid in the bushes and photographed the couple as the groom-to-be popped the question.
